My friend from Iceland e-mailed me recently something about Reykjavik ‘flu. It was in response to my lament on my old Ford Lazer – I’d sure like a shiny new one – what is he on about?

Dear Søren,

Subsequent to the financial shock that, in many ways, epicentered in Reykjavik, Iceland, the streets resounded with frequent booming noises from mysteriously exploding near-new Land Rovers. Later research indicated that clever locals were indeed blowing up their ‘Rovers for insurance purposes, no longer having the means to support the lease payments. This became known amongst the insurance companies as “Reykjavik “Flu”. The perpetrators also became known as “dickheads”. There has been no antivirus as yet developed for this level of idiocy for this malady, nor fisherman taking up global banking on a whim.

Dear Sharon,

In recent times-say over the last year-I have noticed an increase of hesitation, crashes, and downright time wasting while I am waiting for most Microsoft applications. Also, most web browsing seems to take an inordinate amount of time to come up, and perfectly innocent web sites cause the browser to shut right down, necessitating another five minutes of work re-opening the windows. Once opened the second time there seems to be no issue with site verification. What is happening?
